Dear Colleague,

Over the past several months, a number of Academic Researchers (ARs) have asked questions about the bargaining or unionization process, and what being a unionized academic employee actually means. Answers to these frequently asked questions can be found on the website here. If you have questions that aren’t covered, we’d love to hear them!

A question we have heard frequently is whether forming a union would reduce the flexibility in compensation or working arrangements some ARs enjoy and want to preserve. The answer, simply put, is ‘No’. We, as ARs, can determine our bargaining priorities, including aspects of current working conditions we want to preserve, improvements we want to make, and protections we want to ensure are present. For example, UC Postdoctoral researchers decided to negotiate a minimum salary scale, while retaining the ability for individual Postdocs to negotiate for wages above these minimums. If there are aspects you love about your current work and want to preserve, please join the discussion!

An important point to note is that the bargaining process includes collecting feedback through surveys from all ARs, ratifying initial bargaining demands, an open bargaining process, and a democratic contract ratification process. This ensures comprehensive representation. You can read full details here.

As always, if you would like to get involved or have a question, feel welcome to reply to this email. Please also take a moment to check out, like, and share our Facebook page!
