Dear Colleague,

As we eagerly await news from the state labor board about our union’s certification, we continue to prepare for bargaining with UC administration. We are writing with a few important updates for today:

Bargaining team nominations are now open
We are excited to announce that the nomination period for our Academic Researcher bargaining team begins today! Once our union is certified by the state labor board, ARs on the bargaining team will begin meeting with UC administration to negotiate a contract.

While the support, participation, and feedback of thousands of ARs is crucial in bargaining a contract, the elected bargaining team has the additional responsibility to attend bargaining sessions, decide on specific proposals, determine bargaining strategy, and communicate about the status of bargaining to the larger AR community. It is also very important to have a bargaining team that reflects the high diversity of ARs – in terms of gender, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, and immigration status – and also with regard to job title, level of research experience, campus, and research area.

The bargaining team will consist of a minimum of 15 ARs and a maximum of 25. The deadline to accept nomination is Monday, Nov. 12 at 7:00 pm. If more than 25 ARs accept nomination, then an election will be held from Nov. 19 to Nov. 20. Voting will be conducted online.

To accept nomination and run to be on the bargaining team, send an email to with:

  • Your full name, email address, UC campus, and job title
  • A candidate statement (500 word maximum). Candidate statements should include why you are interested in being on the bargaining team, any past involvement in Academic Researchers United, and a diversity statement. In the event of an election, candidate statements will be made available to all ARs.

If you have any questions or would like to learn more, please do not hesitate to email us.

Bargaining survey and initial bargaining demands
One of the bargaining team’s first tasks will be to draft initial bargaining demands, which must be democratically approved by ARs. To inform initial demands, and bargaining as a whole, please fill out the bargaining survey today (if you have not done so already). Additionally, all campuses will be holding meetings to discuss survey results and ideas for improvements in mid-November.

Communications and Research teams
As mentioned above, participation from everyone is essential to bargain a great contract. One opportunity to get involved and support the bargaining team is to help with communication strategy and/or research. If you would like to help with either of these items, please contact us to get involved!
