Bargaining continued this week at UC Irvine! We made progress by reaching tentative agreements on Health and Safety, and Time and Effort Commitment (an article that primarily deals with a small fraction of ARs who are paid hourly). We also made counter-proposals on Union Access and Rights, and Union Security.
After waiting almost two months for a response to our proposal on Abusive Conduct and Micro-aggressions – which would help protect ARs from bullying and other abusive behaviors – UC announced Tuesday that it did not plan to respond and claimed that there are already policies and procedures in place to deal with these situations. The Bargaining Team rejects UC’s position. Many ARs have reported experiences contrary to this assessment and we will continue the fight to ensure that ARs have effective mechanisms for preventing and remedying bullying and abusive behavior.
UC also made their first proposal on an article for the Project Scientist title series, which essentially codified existing policies and failed to address any of the longstanding problems with fair and transparent career advancement or job security. This is consistent with UC administration’s troubling stance that “everything is fine and no improvements are needed.” We are working on counters to UC’s initial proposal.
UC has also not provided any counter-proposal on Compensation, despite its illegal denial of July 1 pay-scale adjustments to 4800 Academic Researchers.
