Dear Colleague,

We’re pleased to announce that the new contract was ratified by a vote of 2450 to 53, a 98% margin. A majority of all Academic Researchers voted to ratify the new contract! As of today’s ratification, the contract is now in effect and will expire on September 30, 2022.

With this agreement, all Academic Researchers—Project Scientists, Professional Researchers, Specialists, and Coordinators of Public Programs—have won significant improvements to our rights and benefits. Across the state, our message is loud and clear: ARs are ready and willing to take action to ensure that our working conditions reflect our value to UC research.

Sign up for Membership and Strengthen Our Union ???
If you voted to ratify the contract, that doesn’t automatically make you a member. You still need to sign up for membership to participate in and strengthen our Union of Academic Researchers. Each and every member makes us stronger!

The more ARs who participate in our Union, the more collective power we all have. Our ability to enforce the many rights and protections we’ve won and expand them in the future depends on every AR becoming a Union member.

Click here to sign up as a member now.

Member dues are 1.44% of your pay and are deducted automatically. Dues deductions won’t begin until the contractual wage increases go into effect in January. For frequently asked questions about dues, please click here.

You can read a summary of the contract here, a salary explainer here, a comparison of before and after the contract here, and the full agreement here.

Next Steps for our Union
Winning our first union contract is just the first step. We have lots more work to do, for example:

  • Identifying and solving workplace issues (i.e., enforcing the contract);
  • Advocating for issues most important to ARs, like gender and racial equity, climate change, science funding, etc.;
  • Building power for future rounds of contract negotiations.

If you would like to be involved or learn more, please don’t hesitate to reach out!

In solidarity,
